Cinch

I have had the honor in the last two years to photograph the amazing wild horses of Colorado. But out of all the beautiful horses I have gotten to photograph it is this stallion, CINCH, that had captured my heart the very first moment I laid eyes on him. In September of this year he was laid to rest due to injury's after a gather at Spring Creek. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the gather

Cinch
He glides across the snow covered plains,
As each hoof hits the ground, the snow flies up to cover his long winter coat.
The long mane is flowing in the wind from side to side.
His nostrils are flared to the fullest with his ears perked to their highest position. Searching out each and every smell, and sound that they can experience, he takes in a huge breath and breathes out a soft billowing smoke of air that floats through the air. He whinnies to his ladies letting them know that he is on watch and all is fine when Cinch is around.

Misc information

I wanted to share some information, stats, and facts with everyone in case they have never seen them.

  • 1950 - Wild Horse Annie (Velma Bronn Johnston) witnessed the terrible sight of wild horses crammed into a slaughterhouse truck. Because of this she exposed this and other inhumane actions to the public.
  • 1959 - Wild Horse Annie Act (P.L. 86-234) was passed with the aid of Nevada U. S. Representative Walter S. Baring. This act prohibited the usage of motorized vehicles and the poisoning of water holes to aide in capturing or killing wild horses.
  • Wild Horse and Burro Act 1971 (P.L.92-195) Unanimously passed and signed into law by President Nixon, December 15, 1971
  • June 27, 1977 Wild Horse Annie passed away from her battle with cancer
  • Stats 71-06
    • 1976 FLPMA authorizes helicopter gathers, Initiates the Adopt a Horse or Burro Program
    • 1985 Congress directed the BLM to triple removals
    • 1989-90 Removals impacted by appeals by humane groups to IBLA
  • Colorado Wild Horse Populations and Acres
    • 1996 - 871 horses and 366,098 HMA acres, 38,656 other acres, Total 404,754
    • 2011 - 984 horses with the AML at 812, 365,988 HMA acres, Total 404,013 acres
  • 10 state Wild Horse and Burro Populations
    • 1996 - 35,286 horses, 6.852 burros
    • 2011 - 33,014 horses, 5,483 burros, AML of 26,576
  • FAQ's
    • Q- How much of the original herd area acreage is managed today for wild horses and burros?
      • A- About 62% or nearly 31.9 million acres of original herd areas are managed for wild horses and burros today.
    • Q- Why doesn't BLM eliminate livestock grazing from Herd Management Areas so wild horses and burros can have this forage?
      • A-  Under the 1976 Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA), the BLM is required to manage public lands under the principles of multiple use and sustained yield.  Managing use by cattle and sheep, together with wildlife and wild horses and burros, and a host of other uses is a key part of BLM’s multiple use management mission under FLPMA
    • Q- Is using helicopters and motorized vehicles safe and humane for the animals?
      • Yes.  Prior to the passage of the 1971 WFRHBA, mustangers used fixed wing aircraft and motorized vehicles to roundup wild horses and burros with none of the controls we have today.  Since the passage of the 1971 Act, all capture and handling activities are conducted in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).  BLM personnel are on site throughout the capture operation to assure humane treatment of the animals.  From time to time, BLM Nevada also invites representatives from humane groups and the media to observe wild horse and burro gather operations. The use of helicopters and motorized vehicles has proven to be a safe, effective and practical means for the gather and removal of excess wild horses and burros from the range.  This is demonstrated by the capture of nearly 26,000 excess animals during 2004-2008 in Nevada with a mortality rate of one-half of one percent (.005%) which is very low when handling wild animals.
    • Q- What qualifications do gather contractors have?  If they treat an animal inhumanely, does BLM take action?
      • Prior to being awarded a gather contract, potential contractors undergo a rigorous technical program review by a team of experts.  Potential contractors must meet all the terms and conditions required in the Bureau’s application process and tangibly demonstrate they have the knowledge, skill, ability, expertise, labor and equipment needed to humanely capture, handle and transport wild horse s and burros.BLM takes reports of misconduct by gather contractors very seriously.  Such reports are investigated and BLM will take appropriate action, up to and including cancelling the gather contract depending on the severity of the misconduct.
